The University of Illinois Small Grains breeding program focuses on soft red winter wheat and spring oats for Illinois and surrounding areas.

Broad research objectives include:

• Development of adapted varieties with high yield potential, disease resistance and quality.
• Development of germplasm for use by other breeders
• Conducting research to discover new knowledge about the genetics, growth and disease resistance of wheat and oats.
• Provide educational opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students.
